George E. "Groundhog" Murphy, Jr., 71, of Switz City, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 16, 2018 at the Hospice House in Bloomington, Indiana. George was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on July 8, 1946 to George E. Murphy, Sr. and Mary Lee (West) Ervin. George served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and was a longtime member of the American Legion and V.F.W.. George retired from N.S.A. Crane, worked at Stahls Quality Meats in Bloomfield, and was a Pastor at the Heritage Baptist Church in Vincennes, Indiana. George was a third degree Tomahawk in the Black Powder Brotherhood, based out of Laconia, Indiana. George married the love of his life, Brenda J. (Krueger) on July 27, 1968.
George is survived by his wife, children, Elizabeth A.(Scott) Williams of Worthington, Matthew E. Murphy of Switz City, Heather M. (Loran) Kirby of Switz City, grandchildren, Levi (Kyla Graves) Fletcher, Vanessa (Evan) Johnson, Abigail (Parker Roark) Fletcher, Courtney Murphy, Scott Williams, Courtney Williams, great-grandchildren, Tyler Johnson, "one on the way", sister, Barbara (Joseph) Allen, best buds, Davey Setters, Chris Stahl, and several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents and brother Richard "Rick" Murphy.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at the Welch & Cornett Funeral Home, Worthington. Pastors David Collison and Mark Hafenbreidel will officiate. Burial will follow in Worthington Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Tuesday, February 20, 2018 and again 9:00 AM until the time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
