Helen grew up in Bedford and graduated from Linton-Stockton High School in 1940. She married Andrew S. Ferguson on August 1, 1942. They lived in Bloomfield until 1959 when they bought a farm in Linton. Andrew and Helen were married for 65 years until he passed away April 15, 2007.

When her children were young, she had a scout troop. She was a member of Linton First United Methodist Church, Country Corner Home Economics Club, and Toast Masters. She entered many projects in the homemakers open class at the 4-H fair and helped her children with their projects. Every year she would go to Purdue with her homemakers club and roomed with Laveda Carr. One year she sang with the homemakers at a combined choir in Bloomington.
Her husband Andrew would plant and tend their garden and Helen would can and freeze the vegetables. She enjoyed sewing and making clothes for herself and her family. She was very good at quilting and the family was blessed when she gave them one as a gift. Helen loved running places with her friends and she would always drive.
