Hilton Loy "Sonny" Thompson, age 89, of Worthington, passed away peacefully at 8:03 A.M. on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Aperion Care in Spencer. Sonny was born in Freedom on Easter Sunday, March 31, 1929, the son of Lex & Ivadale "Tottie" (Hickham) Thompson.
Sonny graduated from Freedom High School Class of 1947. He attended Lanes Business School in Indianapolis, IU Extension in Indianapolis and received his BS and MS in Agriculture Education from Purdue University in 1952. He served in the US Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean War.
Sonny was a member of Folsom United Methodist Church in Worthington, Sigma PI Fraternity , and a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge. He taught Vocational Agriculture at Princeton High School from 1952-1967. Sonny taught Chemistry, Biology and Vocational Agriculture at Worthington High School from 1967-1986. He retired from teaching due to health problems.
Sonny continued to farm and raise Egyptian Arabian horses on his farm, Arabian Acres, north of Worthington. He worked for the National Arabian Horse Association from 1973-2000, serving as Ring Master and Judge for the U.S. Arabian National, Canadian National, U.S. Arabian Youth Nationals, Egyptian Event, Pan Am Games, and the World Cup. Sonny retired in 2013 from farming. He sold his horse farm and moved to the town of Worthington.
He is survived by two nephews, Jerry Lee (Valerie Harris) Fuller and Jimmy (Betti) Fuller, both of Worthington, a niece, Janet Sue (Tom) Cox of Washington, DC, his caregiver and best friend, Aaron Sanders of Worthington, several great and great-great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Hickam Elizabeth "Tootie" Fuller, a brother, Hylan Coy Thompson, and two nephews, John and Gary Edward Thompson.
Funeral service will be held at Folsom United Methodist Church in Worthington at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, January 20, 2019, with Pastor Rick Pressel officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.
Visitation will be held at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer on Saturday from 2-5 P.M., and Sunday at the church from 1 P.M. until the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Worthington Sonshine Shop, Folsom United Methodist Church, or an organization of the donors wishes, through the funeral home.
