Julia S. (Thom) Clemons, 88, a lifelong resident of Owen County, passed away Friday, November 1, 2019 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital after an illness of several months.
Julia was born on July 15, 1931 in Indianapolis, IN to Jay W. Thom, MD and Julia (Swain) Thom, MD, who established a medical practice in Gosport in the depths of the Great Depression.
When Jay was serving as an Army medical officer in the Pacific during World War II, his wife moved their medical office and the family to Spencer, to avail herself of the county's one X-ray machine.
Young Julie and three younger brothers attended Spencer schools until 1947 when a Residency in Psychiatry drew Dr. Julia to Indianapolis. Her daughter Julia chose to stay and finish her senior year with her Spencer High School classmates, a sign of her lifelong attachment to the town. She raised six children with her husband, the late William C. Clemons, CPA.
To Julia, family was the most important unit of the social structure and she devoted herself to nurturing good citizens. She was an avid supporter of track and field events, in which her sons excelled and of her youngest daughter's role as a cheerleader.
Inspired by their doctor grandparents, several of Julia's children entered careers in nursing, physical therapy and training, and medical technology most remaining close to Spencer.
Julia maintained long and cheerful friendships with Spencer neighbors. With a remarkable memory, a love of storytelling, and her continued association with the community, she was the unofficial history-keeper of the Thom clan in this vicinity. High points of her social life were hosting or presiding over family holiday feasts, which always featured her specialty persimmon pudding. Julia also had a lifelong love of horses and was an accomplished rider.
Julia is survived by her three sons, Alen Clemons, Thom Clemons and Craig Clemons (Cindy); two daughters, Pamela Gutierrez (Tom) and Lucinda Farkas (Dennis); two brothers, James Alexander Thom (Dark Rain) and Robert C. Thom (Andrea); seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband William Clemons, daughter Julia Chaney and brother John Thom.
Memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, November 8, 2019 at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 4 PM until the time of service at the funeral home.
