Larry Joseph Newton, Sr.

May 10, 1944 ~ April 23, 2018 (age 73)

Larry Joseph Newton Sr., 73 years young, of Spencer, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Monday; April 23, 2018 at the Indiana University Hospice House in Bloomington.  

Larry was born in Bloomington, Indiana on May 10, 1944 to Clarence Ray and Doris Laverne (Chambers) Newton. He loved working on and restoring tractors, fishing, shade tree mechanic work, spending time with his family and his many friends and spend time at his and Nina’s Tennessee home at Reelfoot Lake.

Larry graduated from Ellettsville High School in 1962. He served his country proudly in the United States Army National Guard during the Vietnam Era. Larry retired from Indiana University Physical Plant after 43 years. He was an Owen County Sheriff's Reserve Deputy since 1984, proudly protecting and  serving his county and community along side his law enforcement and first responder brothers and sisters. He was an active member of the Coal City American Legion Post #141 and faithful member of Ellettsville First Baptist Church.

Larry is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Nina Ruth (Grubb) Newton, who he met in a hayfield while working on her Dad’s farm years before marrying her on March 22, 1965 in the house of his parents. They spent more than a half century together hand in hand doing everything together from farming to fishing to fixing numerous vehicles and tractors. They are a true example of everlasting true love. His legacy lives on through his children, Larry Joseph Newton Jr. and wife Amy of Coal City, Sheila Michele Newton and significant other Christopher Cain of Guthrie, Lacey Jane Newton of Spencer and Brian Keith Newton of Spencer, many “adopted” kids and his “fur” sons Teddy Bear and Sammy. His grandkids, Tom Bedway, James Newton, Kaeli Jones and husband Sam, Amber Sumner and husband Ed, Ethan Adkins, Aja Newton, Dacotah Newton, Joe Ray Newton-Pursell, Henry Cain and Elijah Newton and many grandpups that he spoiled like his own. His great-grandkids, Peyton and Declan Newton, Hunter Duff, Braeli and Harrison Jones. His beloved brothers, Donnie Newton and wife Janet of Spencer, Roger "Pete" Newton and wife Annette of Spencer. With several nieces and nephews who were happy to call him uncle.

Larry was greeted by his past faithful companions Tramp, Lady, Doobie 1, Doobie too, and grandpups Honey and Indica at the Rainbow Bridge to which they walked together to the Gates of Heaven where he was welcomed by his Savior, Jesus Christ, Father God, many good friends and family, into the open arms of his parents and a long awaited reunion with his daughter, Carol Elaine Newton who passed shortly after birth. He will forever be watching over us until we meet him again.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM, Saturday, April 28, 2018 at the Ellettsville First Baptist Church, 115 South Sales Street, Ellettsville, Indiana 47429.  Pastor Mark Villanova will officiate.  Burial will follow at Valhalla Cemetery, Bloomington, Indiana.

Visitation will be 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Friday, April 27, 2018 at the West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home, Spencer, Indiana, and again on Saturday, 11:00 AM until the time of service at the church.
