Robert Paul "Pete" Ranard, age 92, of Stinesville, passed away at 3:28 A.M. on Saturday, March 9, 2019, at IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington. He was born in Freeman on January 13, 1927, the son of John G. & Grace F. (Wilbur) Ranard.
Pete met the love of is life Norma while a top a tree (tree trimming) in Stinesville in 1944, and whistling at her while she walked down the street. He served in the United States Army from 1945-1946 in the Philippine Islands and Japan with the 8th Calvary. He received an Army Occupational Medal and Victory Medal Asiatic Pacific Service Medal.
He was a devout member of the Stinesville Nazarene Church for many years. He was a self-taught carpenter and mechanic, and was a good handy-man. Pete lived life to the fullest and enjoyed watching basketball games on TV. He had an amazing sense of humor, and could quote bible verses to the very end, maintaining many memories from the age of 5 until the present.
He is survived by his son, Bobby Ranard of Stinesville, four daughters, Sue (Gail) Carpenter of Spencer, Judy (Roger) Sullivan of Stinesville, Becky (Ron) Taylor of Gosport, Terri (Kevin) Briles of Bloomington, a brother-in-law, Bob (Vera) Swafford, nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter due in July.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Norma Swafford Ranard, two sisters, Iva Lena Phillips & Annabel Corder, six brothers, Ralph, Fred, Bernard, Archie, Chester, and Jesse Ranard.
Pete's family would like to thank Dr. Louis Calli for his excellent and devoting care through the years, and to the IU Hospice Team, they are all truly God's angels on earth.
Funeral service will be held at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, with Alan Phillips officiating. Burial will follow Chambersville Cemetery in Spencer, with military honors performed by the Owen County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8 P.M., and Wednesday from 12 noon until the time of service.
