Susan Newland, age 76, of Crane, formerly of Spencer, passed away at 10:46 P.M. on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She was born in Westmoreland, Tennessee on July 22, 1941, the daughter of Joe G. & Gladys (Calvert) Mandrell.
Susan worked at the Indiana State Prison System, working at the Indiana Youth Center in Plainfield and the Women's Prison in Indianapolis.
She resided in the Indianapolis for many years, living in Spencer for nearly twenty years, and lived in Crane since 2009.
She was a member of the Church of the Ladder Day Saints in Crane and was a proud active member of AA for thirty-five years.
She was a wonderful artist that enjoyed painting, feeding animals, and enjoyed gardening.
She is survived by her husband, Marvin Newland of Crane, her son, Phil James of Indianapolis, her step-children, Kimberly Newland of FL, Kevin Lee Newland of FL, and David Simpson of Indianapolis, two brothers, Leon (Diana) Mandrell of Indianapolis and Joe Willie (Illa) Mandrell of Beech Grove, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her daughter, Crystal Watts.
Funeral service will be held at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 16, 2018. Burial will follow at Scotland Cemetery in Scotland.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7 PM, and Wednesday from 10 AM until the time of service.
