W.E. "Doc" Mathes, D.V.M., 91, of Worthington, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 25, 2018 at his residence. Doc was born on July 5, 1927, in Smith Center, Kansas, to Lloyd Embree and Ophelia Eva (Littrell) Mathes. Doc graduated from Smith Center High School in 1945 and then served his country in the United States Army During WWII while stationed in the Philippines. He attended Kansas State University in Manhattan Kansas from 1948-1951, graduating with degrees in Agriculture and Science. Doc farmed in Kansas for six years before returning to college in Manhattan. He graduated Kansas State University, School of Veterinarian Medicine in 1961 where he received two awards: Large Animal Clinician Award and the Upjohn Award. The family moved to Worthington, Indiana in June of 1961, were Doc established a 57 year practice of Veterinarian medicine, treating both Large and Small Animals. At the time of his death he was the oldest licensed veterinarian in the state of Indiana. He loved to coon hunt, fish and do anything outdoors. Doc was a longtime member of the Linton Elks #866 and the Worthington American Legion #106.
Doc is survived by his girls, Karen (Kelly) Howard of Texas, Kathy (Tim) Noel of Worthington, grandchildren, Nathan (Nicole) Noel of Linton, Adam Noel of Worthington, and six nephews.
Doc was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Leola M. (Caldwell) Mathes, siblings, Elbert Corwin Mathes, Ona Marie Coburn, Robert Allen Mathes, Merrium Louise Harper, Marjorie Faye Griffiths, Meredith "Mick" Lee Mathes, D.V.M..
Funeral services will begin at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at the Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Worthington. Private burial will take place in Worthington Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation will be 3:00 PM until the time of service at the funeral home on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Greene County Humane Society in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.welchcornett.com.
