Helen Josephine Pogue, age 99, of Spencer, passed away at 8:20 P.M. on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at Hickory Creek at Sunset in Greencastle. She was born in Monroe County on June 6, 1919, the daughter of Herman Ray & Fraulein (Livingston) Freeman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Bernard Pogue.
She attended Ellettsville High School where she was an outstanding student. As a member of the Spencer Baptist Church for over sixty-six years, she sang in the choir, served as head of the Primary Department, and assisted with DVBS, youth camp, ladies' missionary society, and children's programs. She was a charter member of the Spencer YMCA and walked there at least five days a week for many years. At age 90 the organization recognized her for her commitment to physical fitness with a surprise party and a life-membership.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Glenn) Byerly of Spencer and Carmen (Jerry) Palma of Parke County, five grandchildren, Brad (Lindy) Honn of Spencer, Brett Honn of Spencer, Kari Palma of Martinsville, Rochelle (Quentin) Madden of Roanoke, Virginia, and Julie Wright of Spencer, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, brother, Don Freeman, sisters, Maxine Albright, Barbara Carpenter, and Janice Wiley, and a step-son, James Albert Pogue.
Helen "Jose" Pogue will be remembered for her dedication to her Lord and her family, her generous spirit, and her love for music. Memorable also was her appreciation for lovely things such as jewelry, her sizeable doll collection, and a home interior with a designer touch.
Funeral service will be held at West & Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, with Rev. Randy McCollum and Rev. Dr. Quentin Madden officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 11 A.M. until the time of service.
